Sterile cress (Nasturtium sterile) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is a natural hybrid between watercress (Nasturtium officinale) and marsh yellow-cress (Nasturtium microphyllum). As the name implies, the plant is functionally sterile and does not produce viable seeds, relying exclusively on vegetative propagation.

The plant originates from European wetlands and temperate regions of North America. Its natural habitat consists of slow-moving streams, shallow ponds, and muddy ditches. It thrives in temperate climates where the water temperature remains relatively stable throughout the growing season, preventing the roots from extreme thermal stress.

Botanically, Nasturtium sterile exhibits a prostrate, creeping habit. The stems are hollow and succulent, developing adventitious roots at the nodes whenever they come into contact with moist soil or water.
