Description

Nerica (New Rice for Africa) is an interspecific hybrid derived from crossing Oryza glaberrima (African rice) and Oryza sativa (Asian rice). This agricultural crop belongs to the Poaceae family. It was developed to combine the high yield potential of the Asian species with the extreme environmental hardiness and stress tolerance of the African species.

The origin of Nerica traces back to the Africa Rice Center (WARDA). It is primarily cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa. This crop was specifically bred to thrive in upland environments where rainfall is unpredictable and soil fertility is naturally low, providing a vital source of income and nutrition for local farmers.

Botanically, Nerica plants are characterized by vigorous early growth, which allows them to outcompete weeds effectively. The plants possess an extensive root system that facilitates moisture uptake in dry conditions. The panicles are typically large and heavy, and the variety of grains produced by different lines offers various culinary applications and improved milling quality.
