Rice (Latin Oryza sativa L.) is a vital cereal crop belonging to the Poaceae (grass) family. The plant is highly sensitive to cold stress, requiring steady temperatures for germination and growth. Its ability to thrive in flooded conditions distinguishes it from most other cereal crops.

Agronomic practices for rice focus heavily on water management. Fields are typically organized into 'paddies' or basins that allow for precise control of water levels. Fertile, heavy soils that retain water are preferred. Fertilization strategies focus on nitrogen management to ensure optimal vegetative growth followed by effective grain filling during the reproductive stage.

Beyond its culinary importance, rice is a key raw material for industrial applications, including starch and alcohol production. However, farmers must combat several pathogens, including Helminthosporium and Rhizoctonia, which cause root and leaf decay. Pests similar to the Sunn pest (Eurygaster integriceps) frequently attack the grain during development, necessitating rigorous integrated pest management programs.
