Japanese locoweed (lat. Oxytropis japonica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the large Fabaceae family. As a member of the Oxytropis genus, it is recognized for its structural adaptation to harsh environments, making it a distinct subject within agricultural studies and field botany.

The native distribution area of this species spans across East Asia, notably in Japan and adjacent regions. It is typically found in well-drained, sunny locations such as mountain slopes, stony terrain, and open meadows. Its evolutionary history has endowed it with the ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils where moisture availability can be erratic.

Botanically, the plant features a basal rosette of pinnate leaves, often covered in fine pubescence that helps reduce transpiration. The flowers, which grow in racemose inflorescences, display typical pea-like structures. The fruit is a pod, which sometimes develops a bladder-like inflation—a defining characteristic of several species within this genus.

Agronomically, the crop requires specific soil conditions to prosper. It demands excellent drainage, as the roots are highly susceptible to rot if exposed to waterlogged conditions for extended periods. In cultivation, it performs best in neutral to slightly alkaline, light-textured soils with full exposure to sunlight. Proper site selection is the primary factor for successful establishment.

Due to its nitrogen-fixing symbiosis, it contributes to soil fertility improvement, which is beneficial for sustainable agricultural practices.
