Yam bean (Pachyrhizus tuberosus) is a significant agricultural crop belonging to the Fabaceae family. Originating from the tropical regions of South America, the plant is now widely cultivated across various equatorial countries. It thrives in humid tropical climates where it can capitalize on long, frost-free growing seasons. Its adaptability has allowed it to become an important food staple in various regions of Southeast Asia and the Caribbean islands.
The botany of the yam bean is characterized by strong, vigorous vines that can climb up to several meters. The root system is distinctive for producing succulent tubers that are highly valued for their refreshing taste and crisp texture. While the plant produces flowers and pods, these are generally avoided in diet due to the presence of rotenone, a natural insecticide found in most aerial parts of the plant.
