Palicourea marcgravii

Palicourea marcgravii is a woody shrub belonging to the Rubiaceae family. In agricultural contexts, this species is not considered a crop but is identified as a highly toxic and invasive weed that poses a significant threat to livestock production. It is recognized as one of the most dangerous plants in tropical areas, particularly known for its lethal effects on grazing animals that accidentally ingest its foliage.

The plant is native to the tropical regions of South America, with its primary range being spread across various parts of Brazil. It thrives in acid soils and humid climates, often encroaching upon pasturelands and agricultural clearings. Due to its aggressive growth habits, it can rapidly colonize large areas, displacing forage species and rendering grazing lands unsafe for cattle and sheep.

Botanically, it is characterized by opposite, lanceolate leaves and small, tubular flowers arranged in panicles. The fruits are berries that turn dark when ripe, assisting in the dispersal of seeds through local bird populations. Its root system is deep and complex, which allows the plant to survive harsh environmental conditions and makes mechanical removal particularly challenging for farmers and land managers.

Management strategies for this plant are focused entirely on eradication:
