Sickle grass (Parapholis marginata) is an annual plant belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a highly specialized grass known for its remarkable ability to thrive in saline environments, such as coastal marshes and salt-affected agricultural zones where standard cereal crops would fail to establish. Its evolutionary biology is perfectly attuned to high osmotic stress.
The native distribution of Parapholis marginata is primarily concentrated in the Mediterranean basin. It is found in habitats that are often characterized by erratic rainfall and high soil salinity. Its role in the ecosystem is that of a pioneer species, capable of stabilizing loose, salty substrates while providing ground cover in harsh, arid coastal conditions.
