Native to the dense rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Indonesia, this species is highly valued both for its high-quality timber and the latex extracted from its bark, which shares chemical similarities with gutta-percha.
The tree thrives in equatorial climates characterized by high annual precipitation and consistently warm temperatures. It prefers deep, well-drained soils, typically found in alluvial plains and lower mountain slopes. As a climax forest species, Payena leerii requires stable environmental conditions to reach its full biological potential, making it a critical component of tropical biodiversity.
