The species has a cosmopolitan distribution, found in various freshwater habitats including lakes, ponds, and slow-flowing rivers worldwide. It typically thrives in eutrophic or mesotrophic conditions where nutrient availability is high. Its presence is often used as a biological indicator for the nutrient status and general health of freshwater bodies.
