The Knowlton cactus is a diminutive succulent species belonging to the Cactaceae family. It is recognized globally as an endangered plant, primarily due to its extremely limited natural range and the degradation of its specific desert habitat, making it a highly protected species in its native environment.

The plant is endemic to a small region spanning the borders of northwestern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado, USA. It typically inhabits rocky hillsides and gravelly slopes where the soil is nutrient-poor but rich in limestone. Botanically, the species is defined by its small, globular stems that often grow in clusters.
