The native range of this plant extends across the western mountainous regions of North America, encompassing parts of states such as Montana, Idaho, Colorado, and New Mexico. Naturally found on rocky slopes and ridges, it has evolved to survive harsh winds, intense UV radiation, and deep freezing temperatures characteristic of high altitudes.
Botanically, the plant features a solitary or clumping spherical stem covered with dense, intricate spines.
