Matsudana willow

The Matsudana willow (Salix matsudana), often referred to as the Chinese willow or corkscrew willow, belongs to the Salicaceae family. It is widely recognized for its striking, contorted branches, which make it a popular choice for ornamental gardening. As a deciduous tree, it can reach heights of 10 to 15 meters, showcasing a unique architectural form that provides visual interest throughout the seasons.

The species originates from Northeast China, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It naturally inhabits riverbanks and moist plains, which dictates its preference for sites with high soil moisture. The bark on younger branches is often light-colored and smooth, turning darker and slightly fissured as the tree matures, adding to its textural appeal.

Cultivation of Salix matsudana requires a location with full sun and nutrient-rich, moist, but well-drained soil. It is particularly responsive to organic fertilizers and should be watered deeply during dry spells. Pruning is an essential part of the care regimen; removing dead or diseased wood and shortening long branches helps maintain the desirable shape and prevents the crown from becoming too heavy.
