Description
Pearl millet (Pennisetum spicatum), also known as bulrush millet, is an important annual cereal crop belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized as the most drought-tolerant of all major cereal crops, making it a critical source of nutrition for millions of people in arid and semi-arid environments.
The crop originated in West Africa and has a history of cultivation spanning several millennia. Today, it is extensively grown across the Sahel region of Africa and throughout the arid plains of India. Its ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils and its resistance to heat stress allow it to be cultivated where other staple crops, such as maize or sorghum, would fail.
Botanically, pearl millet is a robust grass that can reach heights of up to 3 meters. It possesses an extensive root system that facilitates moisture uptake from deep soil layers. The plant produces a dense, spike-like panicle, or candle, that is covered in small, nutrient-dense grains. This structure is highly efficient at protecting the seeds from environmental stressors.
Agronomic requirements are centered around heat and light. The plant requires a long, hot growing season to reach its full potential. While it can survive on minimal rainfall, its yield is significantly increased with moderate irrigation. Soil management is relatively simple as the plant is adaptable to various soil types, though it prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils.
The economic applications of pearl millet are diverse:

Regarding pests, the stem borer remains a major challenge that can drastically reduce grain yields if left unchecked. Integrated pest management, including crop rotation and the selection of resistant cultivars, is recommended to ensure a successful harvest.
