The plant is native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, specifically restricted to the Olympic Mountains in Washington state. Its natural habitat consists of rugged, high-altitude rock crevices, where it thrives in conditions that are typically inhospitable to most vegetation, demonstrating remarkable resilience to drought and sub-zero temperatures.

Botanically, it forms dense, slow-growing, evergreen mats or mounds of leathery leaves. The foliage is arranged in tightly packed rosettes, providing a unique texture throughout the growing season. During the peak of summer, the plant produces attractive, erect, spike-like racemes covered with tiny, creamy-white flowers, which rise above the dense foliage mat.
