The plant is native to the southeastern United States, primarily restricted to specific regions of Florida. Its habitat is highly specialized, typically found in wet prairies, seepage slopes, and open savannas where the soil remains consistently moist. The species thrives in environments characterized by fire-dependent ecosystems, which keep the areas open and free from woody competition.

Without these biological partners, the plant cannot absorb necessary nutrients to survive, making traditional agricultural techniques ineffective.
