The King Trumpet mushroom, scientifically classified as Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae, is a premium edible fungus belonging to the Pleurotaceae family. It is highly valued in gastronomy for its dense, meaty texture and umami-rich flavor, often distinguishing it from other more common mushroom varieties.

The species originates from the arid and steppe regions of Central Asia and the Mediterranean. In its natural habitat, it acts as a decomposer and root parasite, specifically associated with species of the Ferula genus. This evolutionary background requires specific agricultural substrates that mimic its natural nutrient sources, such as lignin and cellulose-rich materials.

Botanically, the species is defined by its thick, cylindrical stem and a relatively small, convex cap that may flatten with age. The mushroom is robust and exhibits a unique morphological structure that facilitates easier harvesting and significantly longer shelf life compared to typical oyster mushroom species, making it a favorite for commercial distribution.

Cultivation requires specialized agricultural practices, including the preparation of a sterilized or pasteurized substrate mix (often sawdust-based with supplements). Critical parameters include temperature management: maintaining an incubation phase at 22–25°C and triggering primordia formation by lowering the temperature to 13–15°C, accompanied by precise humidity regulation around 85-90%.
