Alpine mint bush

The Alpine mint bush (Prostanthera cuneata) is a compact, evergreen shrub belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is highly regarded in horticulture for its dense, bushy habit and its impressive display of small, fragrant, and highly ornamental flowers.

This species is native to the alpine and subalpine regions of southeastern Australia, primarily found in the states of New South Wales and Victoria. Its natural habitat includes rocky slopes and high-altitude heathlands, which has equipped the plant with significant resilience to cooler temperatures and well-drained growing conditions.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by small, wedge-shaped (cuneate) leaves that emit a pleasant mint-like aroma when crushed. Its flowers are typically white to pale mauve, often marked with dark purple or yellow spots in the throat, creating a striking contrast against the dark green foliage during the spring and early summer flowering period.

Cultivation requirements focus heavily on soil structure and water management. Prostanthera cuneata thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic soils and requires a position that provides full sun to partial shade. Proper maintenance includes light pruning after flowering to maintain a dense shape and encourage future growth, as well as protection from severe waterlogging, which the species does not tolerate.
