The species originates from the Americas, with a significant presence throughout Mexico. While not a cultivated crop in any traditional sense, it is classified as a significant agricultural and silvicultural pest, often causing severe damage to fruit orchards, native forests, and urban landscaping trees.
Botanically, Psittacanthus calyculatus develops a complex system of haustoria that penetrate the bark and xylem of the host plant.
