It is commercially significant as the primary source of pyrethrins, natural compounds highly valued in agriculture and public health for their rapid insecticidal activity.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of the Dalmatian coast in the Balkans. It is currently grown as a commercial crop in various regions around the world, most notably in Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, where high-altitude climates provide the optimal conditions for the plant to thrive.
