The native distribution of this species spans across the tropical and subtropical zones of Asia and Australia. It is frequently encountered in marshy areas, edges of shallow freshwater bodies, and sometimes in rice paddies. Its ability to colonize fluctuating water levels has made it a significant botanical subject for study regarding wetland vegetation dynamics.
Botanically, the plant features slender stems densely packed with whorled, narrow leaves. The morphological plasticity of the species is high; the leaf structure and internode length can change significantly based on light intensity and substrate nutrient availability.
