Description

Indian toothcup (Rotala indica) is a perennial herbaceous aquatic plant belonging to the Lythraceae family. While widely recognized as a weed in Asian rice paddies, it is highly valued in the horticultural industry as a decorative plant for aquariums and artificial wetlands, prized for its vibrant colors and rapid growth rate.

The native distribution of Rotala indica covers tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including India, China, and Japan. It thrives in marshes, muddy banks of slow-moving streams, and flooded agricultural fields. This adaptability allows the plant to transition effectively between submerged and emersed growth forms depending on the water level.

Botanically, the plant features slender stems with decussate, elliptical-to-oblong leaves. One of the most distinct features of this species is its phenotypic plasticity; the leaf color shifts from shades of green to deep pink or bright red when exposed to high intensity, broad-spectrum light and nitrogen limitation. It anchors itself firmly into the substrate with a delicate but efficient fibrous root system.

For successful cultivation, Rotala indica requires high-intensity lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, and consistent carbon dioxide supplementation. The optimal temperature range for growth is between 22°C and 28°C. Agricultural management includes regular pruning to prevent the lower portions of the stems from becoming shaded and dying off, as well as maintaining specific micronutrient levels, particularly iron.

In terms of economic use, it is primarily a commercial product in the aquarium trade. In large-scale agriculture, however, it is frequently treated as a noxious weed that competes with rice crops for nutrients and space. Common issues affecting its health include algal blooms that smother the leaves and nutrient deficiencies that manifest as yellowing (chlorosis) or stunted apical growth.
