Originating from the tropical regions of Asia, the plant thrives in environments characterized by soft, acidic water and abundant sunlight. Its natural habitat includes shallow streams and marshy areas, where it can easily transition between submerged and emersed growth forms depending on the water level.

Botanically, the plant features a slender, upright stem with whorled, narrow leaves. The pigmentation of the leaves is highly dependent on light intensity and the availability of micronutrients, particularly iron. Without proper care, the plant can become leggy, losing its attractive aesthetic appeal.
