Silky osier

Silky osier (Salix x sericans) is a natural hybrid belonging to the Salicaceae family. It is a cross between Salix viminalis and Salix cinerea, combining the favorable characteristics of its parents, such as vigor, high biomass production, and flexibility of the shoots, which are essential for commercial application.

The plant originates from European regions, primarily inhabiting moist habitats such as riverbanks and floodplains. Today, it is cultivated across various temperate regions as an important agricultural crop for both the handicraft industry and modern biomass energy production, thriving in areas with consistent moisture.

Botanically, this shrub is distinguished by its elliptical leaves with a silky, pubescent underside. The shoots are notably flexible and resilient, making them highly suitable for artisanal work.
