Arends Saxifrage (lat. Saxifraga x arendsii) is a popular hybrid perennial belonging to the family Saxifragaceae. Developed by the renowned German nurseryman Georg Arends, this plant is a staple in rock gardens and alpine-style landscapes due to its unique habit and compact growth form.
The culture originates from crossbreeding various mountain species, which gives it significant hardiness and adaptability to temperate climates. Its natural ancestors are adapted to high-altitude rocky environments, which explains the plant's preference for well-drained conditions. It is widely cultivated across Europe, North America, and other regions with similar ecological zones.
Botanically, Arends Saxifrage is characterized by its cushion-forming growth habit. It produces small, moss-like rosettes of deeply lobed, bright green leaves. During the spring bloom, the plant produces numerous slender stems topped with star-shaped flowers, which can range from pure white to deep shades of carmine and pink, effectively masking the foliage.
