Scleria rugosa, commonly known as rugose nutrush, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is a specialized species recognized for its distinct nutlets which possess a wrinkled surface texture, providing it with unique identification traits within the genus.
The plant originates from tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is primarily found in wetland habitats, including marshes, wet grasslands, and seasonal floodplains. Its ability to survive in waterlogged environments makes it a significant species in local wetland ecosystems.
Botanically, the plant features erect, slender stems and narrow, grass-like leaves. Its root system is fibrous and dense, effectively anchoring the plant in loose, wet soils. The reproductive cycle is driven by the production of small, hardened nutlets that are dispersed by water or small animals.
Agronomic management of Scleria rugosa requires consistent irrigation and moisture management. It thrives in soils with high organic matter content.
