Red Lauan (Shorea negrosensis Foxw.) is a giant evergreen tree species belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family. It is one of the most commercially significant trees native to the Philippines, widely recognized in the timber trade as a premium variety of Philippine Mahogany, valued for its rich color and durability.

The species is indigenous to the tropical lowland rainforests of the Philippines. It thrives in high-rainfall environments with deep, fertile soils. As a primary forest species, Shorea negrosensis acts as an essential component of the canopy, providing habitat for numerous endemic fauna and contributing to the carbon sequestration capacity of the forest ecosystem.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by a straight, clear bole that can reach heights of up to 50 meters. It exhibits prominent buttress roots that provide structural stability in shallow tropical soils. The leaves are leathery and elliptical, while the reproductive structure involves small, scented flowers and wind-dispersed winged seeds known as samaras, which are typical for the Dipterocarp family.

Cultivation of this species requires specific climatic and soil conditions. It prefers humid tropical climates with temperatures consistently above 20°C and avoids areas with prolonged droughts. In forest management, success depends on adequate site selection—specifically avoiding waterlogged soils—and managing light conditions, as seedlings require shade in their initial years before transitioning to a more light-demanding stage.

The economic utility of Shorea negrosensis is diverse. The timber is prized for its moderate weight, excellent workability, and rich reddish-brown finish, making it a favorite for high-end furniture, cabinetry, decorative veneers, and boat building. Given the status of the species, current efforts are heavily focused on sustainable forest management and reforestation to balance commercial demand with conservation.

Common health issues include susceptibility to heart rot fungi, which often manifest in older or stressed trees, and various wood-boring beetle species. Effective silvicultural practices involve maintaining forest hygiene, promoting mixed-species plantations to reduce host-specific pest outbreaks, and monitoring soil nutrient levels to ensure overall tree vigor against potential environmental pathogens.
