Perennial sowthistle (Sonchus arvensis L.) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. In agriculture, it is recognized as a persistent and difficult-to-control weed, capable of significantly reducing yields in various crop types including cereals, legumes, and horticultural crops.

Originating from Eurasia, this species has successfully naturalized across almost all temperate regions of the globe. Its ability to thrive in diverse habitats — from fertile fields to disturbed soils and roadsides — makes it a highly invasive and widespread agricultural pest that poses a constant challenge for farmers worldwide.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a deep and extensive creeping root system that can reach significant depths, allowing it to survive mechanical cultivation. Its stems are erect and hollow, often reaching up to 1.5 meters in height. The plant produces distinctive bright yellow, dandelion-like flowers and yields a large number of wind-dispersed seeds, ensuring rapid colonization of surrounding areas.

The perennial sowthistle is highly adaptable to various soil types, though it performs best in moist, nutrient-rich, and heavy soils. Effective management in agriculture relies on a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Key strategies include frequent shallow cultivation to exhaust root nutrient reserves, deep plowing to disrupt established root networks, and the strategic application of systemic herbicides during the rosette growth stage.
