Stipa ichu, commonly known as ichu or Peruvian feather grass, is a perennial bunchgrass belonging to the Poaceae family. This species is a foundational element of the Andean ecosystem, particularly in the high-altitude regions known as the Puna grasslands.
The native distribution of this plant spans across South America, primarily within the Andean range of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador. It thrives in high-altitude environments, typically ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 meters above sea level, where it occupies vast areas of alpine plains and rocky slopes.
Botanically, Stipa ichu is characterized by its dense tuft growth habit. The leaves are narrow, stiff, and involute, an adaptation that allows the plant to minimize water loss in arid, high-altitude conditions. During the reproductive phase, it develops long, silvery-white plumes that are highly aesthetic and serve as a diagnostic feature for identification in the wild.
Regarding agronomic requirements, the plant is remarkably hardy. It thrives in poor, rocky soils and is well-adapted to the high solar radiation and temperature fluctuations of the high Andes. While it does not require significant fertilization, it is susceptible to overgrazing if not managed correctly. Natural regeneration is often slow, necessitating careful management of grazing cycles to ensure the sustainability of the pasture.
The economic and agricultural utility of Stipa ichu is multifaceted. Beyond its critical role as the primary forage source for camelids such as alpacas and llamas, it serves significant ecological purposes. It acts as an essential soil stabilizer on steep mountain terrain. Additionally, the dried stalks are utilized in traditional handicraft production, such as weaving mats and ropes, and are still used by indigenous populations as a reliable material for roofing.
