Smooth brome

Smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) is a perennial, rhizomatous cool-season grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized in agriculture as a highly productive forage crop, valued for its exceptional winter hardiness, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in a variety of challenging environmental conditions.

Native to temperate regions of Eurasia, Smooth brome has been successfully naturalized across North America and other parts of the world. It is a dominant species in many permanent hayfields and pastures, frequently used for its capacity to form a dense, uniform sod that effectively resists soil erosion and heavy grazing pressure.

Botanically, this grass is characterized by extensive underground rhizomes that allow for aggressive colonization of soil. Its stems are upright, growing up to 1.2 meters tall, and are adorned with smooth, flat leaves. The lack of awns on the glumes is a defining morphological feature, which contributes to the palatability of the forage for livestock.

Regarding soil requirements, Smooth brome thrives best in deep, well-drained loams but shows a remarkable ability to adapt to poorer, lighter soils as well. For optimal growth, it requires adequate nitrogen fertilization. Agronomic management should focus on avoiding overgrazing in the early spring, as this can deplete the root reserves and reduce the longevity of the stand.
