Southern marigold (Tagetes minuta L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known in many regions as wild marigold, this species differs from common ornamental marigolds due to its high industrial potential and pharmacological properties. The plant is characterized by a vigorous growth habit, often reaching significant heights with a highly branched stem structure.

Originating from South America, the plant has become a widespread species throughout many tropical and temperate zones. It thrives in diverse environmental conditions but prefers sunny locations with well-drained soil. Because of its adaptability, it has become a staple crop in various agricultural projects aimed at sustainable land management and pest control.

Botanically, Southern marigold is recognized by its inconspicuous, pale-yellow flower heads and highly aromatic pinnate leaves. The entire plant is rich in specialized secretory glands that produce essential oils, primarily composed of dihydrotagetone, tagetone, and limonene. These compounds are the primary reasons for the plant's distinct scent and biological activity.

Cultivation practices require careful selection of sowing time to ensure optimal temperature for germination. The crop is typically direct-seeded in well-prepared seedbeds. Nitrogen-rich fertilization enhances vegetative development, which is critical for maximizing biomass yield. Maintenance involves minimal irrigation once the plants are established, as they demonstrate remarkable drought tolerance.

However, the plant's inherent chemical defenses generally allow it to outcompete weeds and reduce the need for synthetic chemical inputs, making it an excellent candidate for eco-friendly farming systems.
