It is a highly specialized plant evolutionarily adapted to desert environments. Its most distinctive feature is the dense, woolly, or cotton-like trichomes that cover the leaves and stems, protecting the plant from high solar radiation and dehydration.

The native distribution of this species spans the arid desert landscapes of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. These environments are characterized by high temperatures, low annual rainfall, and sandy or gravelly soils. The plant thrives in such extreme habitats where competitive pressure from other vegetation is minimal, allowing it to occupy specialized ecological niches.

Botanically, Tiquilia gossypina exhibits a compact, low-spreading growth habit. It features small, simple leaves covered in dense hairs, and modest flowers that typical of the Borage family. Its root system is particularly well-developed relative to its above-ground biomass, enabling the plant to anchor securely and access deep-seated moisture during rare precipitation events.

In an agricultural or horticultural setting, it should only be grown in well-aerated substrates, preferably with a high mineral content and minimal organic matter. Irrigation must be strictly limited; overwatering is the primary cause of failure, leading quickly to root rot and fungal infections. It requires full, unobstructed sun exposure to maintain its compact form.

Its ability to tolerate extreme heat and drought makes it a candidate for sustainable landscaping in arid climates.
