The plant is native to the deserts of North America, particularly occurring in states like Nevada, California, and Arizona. It is highly specialized for growth in extreme environments, such as sandy dunes, alkaline flats, and rocky desert pavement. Its survival strategy is centered on maximizing water uptake while minimizing moisture loss through transpiration under the blistering desert sun.

Botanically, Tiquilia nuttallii is recognized by its low-growing, sprawling habit. The stems are intricately branched and covered with small, silvery-grey leaves. This pubescence (fine hairs) is a critical adaptive trait that creates a boundary layer, reducing water loss and reflecting excess solar radiation.
