Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper, commonly known as black gram, is an annual leguminous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It serves as a staple crop in many traditional agricultural systems.
The origin of Vigna mungo traces back to the Indian subcontinent, where it was domesticated thousands of years ago. Its current geographical range of cultivation spans primarily across tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and parts of the Americas. Due to its tropical origin, the crop requires specific temperature conditions that limit its cultivation in cooler, temperate zones.
Botanically, the plant grows as an erect or semi-trailing herb, typically reaching heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. It features trifoliate leaves and yellow, papilionaceous flowers arranged in clusters. The fruit is a cylindrical pod containing small, dark-colored seeds, which are the main commercial part of the plant. Cultivation requirements for black gram center on warm, sunny conditions with temperatures optimal between 25°C and 35°C. It is known for its ability to withstand moderate drought, although consistent soil moisture is crucial during the flowering and pod-filling stages. It performs best in well-drained, fertile loamy or sandy soils, and it is highly susceptible to waterlogging, which can severely hinder development.
