The pathogen Acidovorax cattleyae is a destructive bacterium responsible for brown spot disease in various orchid species. It is a highly contagious disease that can devastate an entire collection if not identified and isolated promptly upon the first appearance of symptoms.
Plants in the Cattleya and Phalaenopsis genera are most susceptible to this bacterial infection. The pathogen colonizes the leaf tissues and pseudobulbs, interfering with the plant's metabolic processes and causing systemic damage that is often irreversible in advanced stages.
Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand rapidly, turning dark brown or black. Under humid conditions, a translucent halo often forms around the lesions, and the infected tissue may become soft and emit a foul odor.
The development of Acidovorax cattleyae is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and poor air circulation. Water droplets on foliage during the night, as well as mechanical injuries caused by pruning tools or pests, provide the ideal entry points for the bacteria to infect the host plant.

Growers must sanitize tools with alcohol or fire, ensure proper spacing between plants, and maintain adequate airflow to keep foliage dry.
