Description
Actinobacillosis is a bacterial infection primarily affecting cattle and sheep, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Actinobacillus lignieresii. This condition is colloquially known as "wooden tongue" due to the characteristic hardening of the tongue tissues, which severely affects the animal's ability to feed and thrive in pasture settings.
The causative agent, Actinobacillus lignieresii, is considered an opportunistic pathogen naturally present in the oral cavity of healthy ruminants. The infection typically develops when the bacterium enters subcutaneous tissues through lesions caused by abrasive feed, thorny weeds, or coarse forage, leading to the formation of localized abscesses and fibrous tissue growth.
Key clinical symptoms include swelling and induration of the tongue, lips, and lymph nodes. As the infection progresses, the tongue becomes rigid and non-functional, causing excessive salivation, difficulty in chewing, and significant weight loss. If left untreated, these chronic lesions can lead to systemic deterioration of the animal's health.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease development. Pastures contaminated with harsh, lignified plant material or sharp, dry stalks increase the likelihood of oral injuries. Furthermore, unsanitary water sources and crowded feeding conditions can facilitate the spread of the pathogen among the herd during periods of nutritional stress.
Economic damage stems from reduced livestock performance, treatment costs, and, in severe cases, the loss of animal production. Effective management involves avoiding coarse, abrasive forage, maintaining clean feeding environments, and monitoring herd health to detect early-stage granulomatous lesions before they become severely debilitating.
