Aeromonadaceae plant infection represents a group of bacterial diseases primarily affecting vegetable crops, aquatic plants, and ornamentals. These bacteria, while commonly found in aquatic environments, can act as opportunistic pathogens when plant immunity is compromised by environmental stress or physical injury.
The causative agents are Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria. The disease is categorized as a bacterial soft rot or vascular blight, depending on the site of infection. Upon entry through hydathodes or wounds, the bacteria rapidly multiply and utilize pectinolytic enzymes to dismantle plant tissue structure.
Crops susceptible to these bacteria include greenhouse-grown vegetables, rice, and specific ornamental species. High humidity and waterlogged soil conditions are primary factors that facilitate the spread and colonization of Aeromonadaceae, making poorly drained fields particularly vulnerable.
Symptoms often manifest as localized, oily-looking spots on leaves or sudden wilting. As the infection progresses, the root or stem tissue softens, turns dark, and develops a characteristic foul odor due to the rapid enzymatic decomposition of the internal plant cells.
Control measures rely heavily on integrated management.
