Description
Agropyron mosaic is a viral plant disease caused by the Agropyron mosaic virus (AgMV), which primarily affects members of the Poaceae family. The pathogen is widespread in regions where wheat and its wild relatives grow in close proximity. The virus utilizes various perennial grasses, particularly quackgrass, as a long-term reservoir for its survival throughout the year.
Crops most susceptible to this disease include winter wheat and barley. While the virus can infect a wide range of wild grasses, its economic impact is most pronounced in commercial cereal fields, particularly when the crop is sown adjacent to infested grassy margins or uncultivated lands where the virus persists.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of chlorotic streaks and stripes on the leaf blades, creating a mosaic pattern of light green and yellow tissue. Infected plants often show stunted growth and decreased tillering. As the disease progresses, the leaf tissue may become necrotic, significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and biomass production.
The transmission of the Agropyron mosaic virus is mediated by eriophyid mites. These vectors feed on infected plants and transmit the virus to healthy hosts during subsequent feeding cycles. Favorable conditions for the spread of the disease include mild, humid autumns, which promote the activity and reproduction of mite populations in cereal fields.
The damage caused by the virus results in significant yield losses, primarily through the reduction of grain weight and poor development of the ear. Effective disease management includes the rigorous removal of wild host grasses from the field perimeters, the use of high-quality certified seeds, and the application of integrated pest management strategies to control mite vectors and limit viral outbreaks.
