Zucchini yellow mosaic virus

Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) is a highly damaging plant virus belonging to the Potyviridae family. It causes severe systemic infections in various cucurbit crops, often leading to total crop failure if the infection occurs early in the growing season, causing significant economic impact for farmers.

The virus has a wide host range within the Cucurbitaceae family. It commonly affects zucchini, summer squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and watermelon. Weed species within the same family can act as overwintering reservoirs for the virus, facilitating its persistence in agricultural ecosystems.

Symptoms are characterized by conspicuous yellow mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and stunted plant growth. In severe cases, the foliage may become thread-like or filiform. Fruits produced by infected plants are often severely deformed, showing warty, knobby surfaces and discolorations, rendering them unsuitable for market.

The primary mode of transmission is through aphid vectors in a non-persistent manner, meaning the aphids can acquire and transmit the virus within seconds of probing an infected plant. Furthermore, the virus can be spread through mechanical means, such as pruning tools, equipment, or direct contact between plants during field operations.

Since there is no chemical cure for viral infections in plants, integrated pest management is essential for control:

• Strict weed management to remove alternative hosts for the virus and vectors.
• Use of reflective mulches to deter aphids from landing on young plants.
• Application of insecticides to control aphid populations, although this has limited success due to the speed of non-persistent transmission.
• Sanitation protocols, including the immediate roguing and destruction of symptomatic plants.
• Cleaning and disinfecting tools regularly to prevent mechanical transmission between fields.
