Alder little leaf is a plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria-like pathogens that colonize the phloem of host plants. This infection disrupts the transport of nutrients and hormones, resulting in significant stunting and developmental abnormalities across the entire tree.
The disease primarily affects species of the Alnus genus, including common alder and grey alder. It is a chronic condition that can severely impact the productivity and survival rates of these trees, both in wild forest ecosystems and managed landscapes.
Primary symptoms of the infection include leaves that are significantly smaller than normal, leaf chlorosis, and the proliferation of short, bushy shoots, a condition often referred to as witches' broom. These symptoms are clear indicators of the systemic nature of the pathogen interfering with the tree's hormonal balance.
The spread of Alder little leaf is facilitated by insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers, which acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected trees and transmit it to healthy hosts. Environmental factors, such as high population densities of vectors and favorable microclimate conditions, contribute to the rapid expansion of the disease within a stand.
The economic and ecological damage is severe, as the disease eventually leads to the decline and death of infected trees. Prevention strategies focus on the removal of symptomatic branches or trees to eliminate sources of infection, management of insect populations to reduce transmission, and the maintenance of vigorous, healthy tree stands to improve natural resilience.
