Alphacytorhabdovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the Rhabdoviridae family. These pathogens are characterized by their RNA genome and a distinct bacilliform morphology. They primarily affect the phloem of host plants, causing systemic infections that can lead to significant physiological dysfunction and severe economic losses in agriculture.
The host range of these viruses is quite broad, encompassing various field crops, including cereals, potatoes, and several solanaceous species. By invading the vascular tissue, the virus interferes with the translocation of photoassimilates, which directly impacts the vegetative growth and reproductive potential of the infected plant.
Symptoms of Alphacytorhabdovirus infection often include chlorosis, leaf curling, severe stunting, and overall reduction in biomass. Infected plants typically display uneven maturity, and their fruits or grains may be deformed or undersized, rendering them commercially non-viable.
