Description
Alteromonadales is an order of Gram-negative bacteria that primarily act as opportunistic pathogens in marine environments, specifically affecting cultivated macroalgae (seaweed). While not impacting terrestrial crops, they represent a significant threat to the aquaculture industry by degrading biological assets through enzymatic activity.
The infection is classified as a bacterial rot. The causative agents secrete high levels of extracellular enzymes, such as alginate lyases, which actively break down the complex polysaccharides of the algal cell walls. This biochemical degradation leads to tissue softening, necrosis, and eventual total decay of the affected plant populations.
These bacteria primarily target economically vital seaweed species. The clinical signs of the disease are characterized by visible lesions, bleaching of the seaweed thallus, and a characteristic slimy texture due to tissue decomposition. If left unchecked, these infections can rapidly spread throughout a cultivation area, causing severe economic losses.
Development and dissemination are heavily influenced by environmental stressors. Factors such as elevated water temperatures, high nutrient loading (eutrophication), and poor water circulation create ideal conditions for bacterial bloom. The bacteria thrive in dense cultivation beds where physical contact between plants allows for rapid transmission of the pathogen.
