Anabaena inaequalis is a filamentous cyanobacterium that often presents challenges in wetland agriculture, particularly in rice paddies. While these organisms are recognized for their nitrogen-fixing capabilities in natural ecosystems, their excessive proliferation within irrigation systems is considered an agronomic nuisance that disrupts standard crop management practices.
The primary crop affected by this agent is rice. The cyanobacteria thrive in the flooded environments required for rice production. When conditions are favorable, they form dense surface mats that physically cover the water, acting as a biological barrier that limits light penetration to the submerged seeds and seedlings.
Symptoms of an Anabaena inaequalis outbreak include a visible, slimy, blue-green or brownish crust floating on the paddy water. As the population densifies, it can lead to localized hypoxia in the root zone. Rice plants under these conditions often show signs of stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced vigor, which compromises the uniformity of the crop stand.
The development of this organism is triggered by specific environmental factors: high water temperatures, significant levels of dissolved nutrients (especially phosphorus), and stagnant water conditions. The lack of water movement is the most critical variable, as it allows the cyanobacterial colonies to aggregate and multiply rapidly, blanketing the field surface.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for sustainable rice production and include the following practices:
