Anacystis is a genus of unicellular cyanobacteria that, while naturally occurring, can become a significant agricultural pathogen in aquaculture, hydroponic systems, and rice production. These organisms are known for forming blooms that disrupt the microenvironment of cultivated plants.

The causal agent is a photosynthetic cyanobacterium that thrives in high-nutrient environments. The disease mechanism involves the formation of dense biofilms on plant roots and substrate surfaces, which physically obstruct the absorption of oxygen and essential nutrients by the plant.

Crops most susceptible to Anacystis-related issues include rice (Oryza sativa) and various high-value crops grown in recirculating hydroponic systems. The presence of these organisms often results in reduced vigor, stunted development, and increased vulnerability to secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Symptoms of an Anacystis outbreak include the formation of a slimy, blue-green surface film, a distinctive musty odor, and rapid clogging of filtration systems. Plants typically exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency and stress, as their ability to uptake oxygen from the root zone is severely compromised.
