Anaplasma marginale

Note: Anaplasma marginale is not a plant pathogen. It is a tick-borne, intracellular bacterium that acts as the primary causative agent of bovine anaplasmosis, a serious infectious disease affecting cattle and other ruminants worldwide.

The organism primarily infects the red blood cells (erythrocytes) of the host. By adhering to and entering these cells, A. marginale triggers an immune-mediated destruction of the red blood cells, which results in severe hemolytic anemia, hypoxia, and potential organ failure in the infected animal.

The transmission of this disease occurs mainly through the bites of infected ixodid ticks. However, it can also be spread mechanically through contaminated equipment such as needles, ear taggers, or surgical instruments used on multiple animals without adequate sterilization, making herd management protocols vital.

Symptoms are often dramatic, including high fever, pale or icteric (yellow) mucous membranes, depression, and a significant drop in milk production or weight gain. Severe cases can lead to death if the animal is not treated with specific antibiotics, such as oxytetracycline, in the early stages of the infection.

  • Implement strict tick control programs on pastures.
  • Ensure sterilization of all needles and surgical tools.
  • Monitor the herd closely for signs of lethargy or anemia.
  • Use insecticide ear tags or sprays to repel blood-feeding insects.
  • Consider vaccination in areas where the disease is endemic.

Economic damage from anaplasmosis is significant, encompassing mortality, loss of production, and treatment costs. Maintaining strict biosecurity and integrated pest management practices is the most effective way to protect cattle herds from this devastating hemoparasitic infection.
