Anaplasmataceae refers to a family of obligate intracellular bacteria. While historically associated with animal diseases, their study in plant pathology is crucial due to the complex relationship with phloem-feeding insects. These pathogens act as systemic agents that disrupt the vascular functions of plants, leading to severe physiological disorders.

The disease is characterized by a systemic infection of the phloem tissue. The bacteria do not spread through contact or mechanical injury but require a specific biological vector, such as leafhoppers or planthoppers, to inoculate the host. Once inside the plant, the bacteria multiply and interfere with the translocation of photosynthetic products.

Symptoms of the infection typically include yellowing of foliage (chlorosis), stunting, and abnormal proliferation of lateral shoots known as "witches' broom." In many cases, infected plants fail to produce viable seeds or fruits, and flowers may undergo morphological changes. These signs often resemble those of phytoplasma infections, making accurate diagnosis critical.

The development and spread of these bacteria depend heavily on environmental conditions and the lifecycle of the insect vectors. Warm, dry climates promote the population growth of vectors, leading to rapid outbreaks in fields. The bacteria survive within the bodies of the vectors, allowing for long-distance transmission and persistence in agricultural ecosystems.

Management of these diseases is challenging because the pathogen cannot be eradicated from an infected plant once established. Therefore, control focuses on preventive measures:

  • Rigorous monitoring and management of insect vector populations using systemic insecticides.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the lifecycle of vectors.
  • Using disease-free, certified nursery stock to prevent initial contamination.
  • Eliminating reservoir weeds in and around the field to reduce infection sources.
