Arsenophonus is a genus of bacteria belonging to the Morganellaceae family, widely recognized for their symbiotic relationships with insects. Recently, scientific interest has focused on their role as plant pathogens, specifically in how they inhabit plant phloem and interact with various agricultural crops.

The disease mechanism involves the systemic colonization of the plant's vascular tissue. By residing within the sieve tubes, these bacteria disrupt the translocation of nutrients, which significantly impairs the plant's metabolic functions and overall development, leading to long-term chronic illness.

A variety of agricultural crops, including solanaceous vegetables and leguminous plants, are susceptible to infection. The transmission is predominantly facilitated by sap-sucking insects like leafhoppers, which act as biological vectors, moving the bacteria from infected reservoirs to healthy crops during their feeding cycles.

Symptoms of Arsenophonus infection are often complex, manifesting as generalized chlorosis, stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and abnormal branching patterns. In many cases, the reduction in yield is severe because the plant fails to accumulate sufficient energy for flowering and fruiting.
