Bacillus pumilus is a species of gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacteria that can act as an opportunistic pathogen in plants. While many strains are widely researched and used as biological control agents (biofungicides), certain aggressive strains can cause significant disease outbreaks in various agricultural crops, leading to rot and systemic plant failure.
The causative agent is a rod-shaped bacterium that thrives in the rhizosphere. It infects host plants by entering through natural openings like stomata or via mechanical injuries caused by insects or field equipment. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly and secrete enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, leading to soft rot and tissue necrosis.
This pathogen affects a diverse range of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and cereals. Typical symptoms include sudden wilting, discoloration of leaves, and the development of water-soaked lesions that progress into slimy, necrotic areas. Key strategies include using certified disease-free seeds, maintaining optimal soil pH, and ensuring proper irrigation techniques to avoid waterlogging.
