Bacteroides fragilis is primarily known as a significant anaerobic bacterium, but in the realm of plant pathology, it is associated with the development of soft rots. While it is not a common obligate parasite for all crops, it functions as an opportunistic pathogen that thrives in environments where oxygen is limited, often causing necrotic tissue damage in various vegetable crops.
The disease is categorized as bacterial soft rot, characterized by the enzymatic degradation of the middle lamella in plant cells. This enzymatic activity leads to the rapid loss of tissue structural integrity. The bacteria thrive in anaerobic or microaerophilic conditions, making saturated soil and high-humidity storage areas their primary ecological niches.
Host crops typically include root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and onions, as well as succulent leafy greens. The infection usually initiates through mechanical injuries or entry points created by soil insects, subsequently spreading throughout the tissues of the plant, especially in storage environments where cross-contamination is common.
Symptoms are distinct and often rapid: tissues turn soft and pulpy, often accompanied by a foul odor due to the anaerobic nature of the bacteria. The infection can quickly destroy entire lots of stored produce if temperature and humidity controls are not strictly maintained, leading to significant economic losses for growers.
Prevention is the cornerstone of managing bacteroidosis. Key strategies include:
- maintaining soil aeration and improving drainage;
- minimizing mechanical damage during harvest and transport;
- keeping storage areas clean, dry, and well-ventilated;
- removing and destroying all visibly infected plant material.
