While more commonly studied in veterinary medicine, their role in plant pathology highlights the importance of understanding the interaction between bacteria, insect vectors, and host plants in maintaining crop health.
The disease is classified as a systemic bacterial infection. The pathogen resides within the vascular system, specifically affecting the phloem tissue. Because the bacteria rely on insect vectors for transmission, the infection cycle is inextricably linked to the feeding habits of sucking insects such as aphids, leafhoppers, and mites, which introduce the bacteria directly into the plant's vascular system.
The infection affects various agricultural and horticultural crops, leading to significant physiological stress.
