Begomovirus macroptilivenae is a plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their circular single-stranded DNA genomes and are typically transmitted by insect vectors. As a member of the Begomovirus genus, it is known for causing significant damage to various botanical species globally.
The primary hosts for this virus are leguminous plants (Fabaceae). Economic crops such as beans and soybeans are particularly susceptible. The virus impacts the plant at a cellular level, disrupting metabolic processes and preventing healthy plant development throughout the vegetative and reproductive stages.
Symptoms of infection are distinct and often debilitating for the plant. They include severe mosaic patterns, leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunted growth.
